Youth Media Awards by the American Library Association

Each year the American Library Association honors books and media for children and teens. These prestigious awards are recognized worldwide for high quality literature. These awards, which include Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book awards, are selected by committees composed of librarians and other media experts. Readers, teachers, parents, and librarians may use these award-winning books to help guide them to select outstanding literature. The award announcements are made during the month of January.

World Read Aloud Day

Every year World Read Aloud Day calls attention to the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories around the world. World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults to celebrate worldwide the power of reading. This global event is celebrated by over 100 countries. World Read Aloud Day is sponsored by Scholastic.

Read Across America Day
March 2, 2021

Building a nation of readers, the National Education Association focuses on motivation children and teens to enjoy reading. Visit your local or school library to experience this national event.

Freedom of Information Day
March 16, 2021

Freedom of Information Day (FOI) is an annual event on or near March 16, the birthday of James Madison, who is regarded as the Father of the Constitution and an advocate for openness in government. Each year, the James Madison Award and Eileen Cooke State & Local Madison Award are presented by the American Library Association, Washington, DC Office. These awards are given to individuals or groups who promote public access to government information and the public’s right to know.
