Strings

The Elementary Strings Program provides fifth grade students with the opportunity to begin learning a string instrument in a supportive, engaging environment. Through hands-on instruction, students develop instrumental technique, music literacy, creativity, and performance skills while participating in school concerts and other musical events. Students have the option of learning to play violin, viola, cello, or bass.

Joining Strings

Fifth grade students who are interested in joining the strings program should contact their school's strings teacher.

Getting Started

Students may rent an instrument from the school, based on availability. All school-rented instruments require a signed instrument rental contract before the instrument can be taken home. Students may also rent instruments from a local music store. More information about instrument rentals will be shared by the school strings teacher.

Supplies needed for strings are specific to the instrument that the student plays. The strings teacher will provide this information at the beginning of the year.

Meet the Teacher

  • Carrie Fessner

    Elementary Strings Teacher

    Ms. Fessner received her Bachelor's degree in Music Education and Music Performance at George Mason University. She went on and received her Master's degree in Music Performance at the University of Michigan. This is Ms. Fessner's 16th year teaching music in PWCS. When she is not busy teaching strings, Ms. Fessner can be found playing pickleball, hanging out with her two cats, Pekoe and Scout, or cooking up something delicious in the kitchen. She is very excited for another fantastic year of 5th Grade Strings!
